Lowry’s purpose was to indicate the value of the relationship between pain and pleasureÍ ¾ also how important memories are. She creates a rebellious tone in order to recommend to her readers of the idea of, â€Å"If you feel something is terribly wrong, go beyond to fix it.† Lowry moves to her novel by acknowledging the fact that the Elders (the government) has taken total control over the communityÍ ¾ no one makes there own decisions. The author introduce the quote, â€Å"He felt himself overwhelmed with a new perception of the color he knew as red.† Red can define various emotions, for example: love, passion, anger, furious, horrified, and ect. She uses red out of all the other colors since it is doubtless the most intense color. Jonas’, â€Å"new perception of the color he knew as red† basically clarifies he has a new outlook of the color red, which meaning emotions. The color red symbolics all of the colors and how each can have numerous emotions coming from it. This justifies the reason in why the Elder had removed all the colors. Lowry would also similes the memory of the sled that The Giver gave Jonas. The author compares the memory of sliding downhill to receiving memories. She incorporated the quote, Its like going downhill through deep snow on a sled, he said, finally. The first law that regarded marijuana in America required farmers to grow hemp in the year 1619 for clothing, rope, and other materials, but â€Å"as early as 1840, doctors recognized the medical applications of marijuana, and the drug was freely sold in pharmacies for over a century.† (Rich and Stingl). In 1937, the use and possession of marijuana was made illegal, but â€Å"before 1937 marijuana was freely bought, sold, grown, and used.†(Rich and Stingl). In 1970 the congress decided to classify marijuana as a schedule one drug, which has made the legalization more difficult, â€Å"schedule one drugs are considered dangerous, addictive, and have no medical benefits.†(Rich and Stingl). Along with the negative effects marijuana has on the lungs, it also has many negative effects on the brain.
